Bengal Chamber of Commerce & Industry organized Science Circle Lecture on 1st October, 2016 at Williamson Magor Hall. Mr. Sandip Kumar Neogi, Director, Neogi Technologies And Research Pvt. Ltd. joined the session along with Mr. Pinaki Chakraborty and Mr. Tarun Sen. The lecture was on “Advanced Manufacturing through the Convergence of Micro and Nanotechnologies”. Mr. Sutanu Ghosh, President BCC&I in his welcome address told about the design, discipline and precision of German Technology. He also told that tiny chips has pretty much taken over the global economy. Mr. Olaf Iverson, Consul General, Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany told about the promotion of Indo German collaboration and mentioned that the subject topic is the combination of physics and technological science. Prof. (Dr.) Hans Jorg Fecht, Chaired Professor and Director, Institute of Micro and nanomaterial, Ulm University, Germany in his one hour PPT presentation mainly highlighted about Nano Science which can be applied through Nano Technologies. Nano comes from the Greek word which means dwarf. It talks about micro structural length scales. Novel properties are caused by critical dimension (Products with less than 100 nm (nanometer) ). He also mentioned that Nanotechnology is interdisciplinary. He elaborated the properties of diamond which is extreme and still an emerging material due to its mechanical stability, wear, weight etc. He talked about the first lubricant free mechanical watch launched in the year 2011 which is the conceptual outcome of nanotechnology. He also told about the deposition of silica over diamond which results in the sharp cutting tools widely used in ophthalmic surgery. He talked of smooth surface, curvature of the surface etc.
In the question answer session, two specific questions came up which could not be answered by Prof. Fecht and he assured to come back with its answer afterwards. The first one was related about his observation in coefficient of friction with respect to Young’s Modulus and Bulk Modulus and the second one was regarding the reaction of Silicon and Carbon (from Diamond) to form silicon Carbide. The lecture created a lot of sensation among the participants.
